A British dad and his nine-year-old son have been killed after an Australian landslide hit the family during their holiday.

They died at the scene on the Wenthworth Falls hiking track west of Sydney, police said.

The boy’s mother, 50, and brother, 14, were critically injured in a landslide on a hiking trail in Australia’s Blue Mountains national park on Monday.

They were airlifted out of the valley by a rescue helicopter after emergency services were called to the scene around 1.40pm, New South Wales police said.

Surviving the landslide, a 15-year-old girl from their family got out on foot with the emergency services.

New South Wales ambulance superintendent Stuart Clarke told reporters the situation was heartbreaking.

Detective Superintendent John Nelson, from the Blue Mountains area command, said the area was extremely dangerous and unstable for rescuers.

Paramedics said the injured hikers have suffered head and abdominal injuries.

The family were on holiday in Australia when the disaster had struck.

The British Consulate is assisting in the matter.

The landslip disaster comes after weeks of wet weather in Sydney.

Four million tourists every year visit The Blue Mountains, the most of any national park in Australia.
