A British dad has died after moving 11,600 miles away to start a dream new life in New Zealand.

Triathlete Craig Petrie, 37, was out cycling in the Canterbury area when he was tragically hit by a car.

He was flown to Christchurch Hospital on Wednesday but died from his injuries the following day.

Craig married wife Danielle in 2011 and the couple moved from Holywell, near Wrexham in Wales to New Zealand in 2015 before going on to have two children.

He represented New Zealand at the triathlon Long Course World Championships in Denmark in 2018 and swam 3km, cycled 120km and ran 30km.

Coach John Newsom met Craig in 2015 after he made the dream move.

He said: "I had the privilege of guiding Craig through several of his race build-ups where you could guarantee he would lay it all on the line.

"The local triathlon community passes their condolences to Craig's young family."
