A British couple have been found dead in their hotel room in the Indian city of Agra, local police have said.

Officers told the BBC that the couple, who were in their twenties, may have died of a drug overdose and that there was no suggestion of any crime.

The Hindustan Times reported that the couple were staying at the Hotel Maya, close to the Taj Mahal, the main attraction for tourists visiting the city. It quoted the police senior superintendent Shalabh Mathur as saying: “It appears the two were dead [on] Monday night itself, as the food they had ordered had not been eaten”. Hotel staff reportedly alerted police on Tuesday morning after they could not get a response from the room.

The couple were said to have arrived in India on 11 July and travelled to Agra on Saturday.

A postmortem examination was being carried out on the pair, believed to be aged 24 and 28.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We are aware of reports that two British national have died in Agra, India. We are looking into the reports and are in touch with the authorities.”

The Taj Mahal, in Agra, attracts millions of visitors a year, more than 200,000 of them from overseas.
