British couple finally free after seven months in Taliban detention

  • British couple Barbie, 76, and Peter Reynolds, 80, have been freed from Taliban detention in Afghanistan after seven months.
  • The couple were arrested on 1 February and held without charge, initially in a maximum-security prison and later by the General Directorate of Intelligence.
  • Qatar mediated their release; they departed Afghanistan on Friday and were en route to Qatar, an official confirmed.
  • The couple had lived in Afghanistan for 18 years, running education and training projects, and chose to remain after the Taliban's 2021 takeover.
  • Their family had previously raised concerns about their health and alleged mistreatment during their time in custody, which the Taliban denied.
