British coronavirus survivor, 85, cheered by staff as she leaves hospital

Heartwarming footage shows the moment an 85-year-old British woman is applauded leaving hospital after battling coronavirus.

The pensioner, who has not been named, was hospitalised in Colombia after contracting the killer bug on a cruise ship.

She was in a critical condition when she arrived at the Medihelp Clinic in Cartagena, having been taken ill onboard the MS Braemar last month.

Her son John travelled to South America to be with his elderly mother, and thanked medics for saving her life.

Clinic workers lined up to applaud as she was left in a wheelchair.

The delighted Brit was shown smiling and clapping as she was wheeled from the clinic - before standing up and hugging a nurse who had treated her.

John said, the Daily Mail reports, that he'd been impressed with the care his mum received.

He said: "Their level of knowledge and communication has put my mind at ease.

"They have saved my mum's life. She was critical when she reached the hospital and how she is much much better."

A clinic spokesman told local media: "The patient has been discharged after her good recovery."

Now the woman and her son, who is reportedly from Oxford, will have to stay in Colombia unless a repatriation flight is arranged.

According to local media, three people who helped care for her - two women and a man - caught coronavirus and had to quarantine.

The ship was anchored after five people tested positive for coronavirus.
