British camera operator dies filming BBC drama

A cameraman has died while filming a stunt sequence for a BBC drama while on location in Ghana, the organisation has announced.

Mark Milsome, whose previous credits include Game of Thrones, James Bond film Quantum of Solace and Saving Private Ryan was working on an as-yet unreleased drama titled The Forgiving Earth, when an incident occurred on Saturday.

According to reports, Milsome was working on a night shoot for a stunt sequence involving cars.

An investigation into the incident has been launched, Sarah Prince of the film personnel agency PrinceStone told the BBC.

“We all need answers to this dreadful tragedy,” she said.

Speaking to The Independent Ms Prince said Milsome was “respected and admired, not only for his phenomenal talent but also for his generosity. He was a very gentle gentleman.”

She added: “While there’s much bad press for the industry at the moment, Mark was the antithesis of that. We can’t afford to lose people like that.”

The BBC said it was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the news, calling Milsome “a much respected colleague”.

Director Mark Hernan who worked alongside Milsome on films including Brassed Off and Little Voice paid tribute to the cameraman, saying he was “one of the nicest guys in the business”.

The 54-year-old leaves behind a wife and daughter.
