A four-year-old British boy has drowned in a swimming pool at a holiday villa in Spain, police have said.
The boy entered the water as his parents hosted a dinner party with around 20 guests at the property in Mijas, near Málaga on the Costa del Sol, according to local media.
A medical team from a nearby health centre arrived and tried to resuscitate the four-year-old but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Spain on 16 August. We are in contact with local authorities and have provided the family with advice on bereavement abroad, including on repatriation.”
Police in Mijas confirmed the boy died on Sunday afternoon at a property in the town. A spokesman said: “The boy was from a family who were staying at a house where there was a party being held. In the house there is a swimming pool.
“The child – a four-year-old – went into the pool and could not swim, and he has died.”
An autopsy is to be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
Mijas, about 20 miles south-west of Málaga, is split into three different neighbourhoods – Mijas Pueblo, a village up in the mountains, Las Lagunas, a modern built-up area, and Mijas Costa, a 7.5-mile-long (12km) coastal resort, where it is understood the incident occurred.
