British boy, 12, dies in holiday swimming tragedy in popular campsite in France

A British youngster has tragically died while on holiday in France.

The 12-year-old boy is believed to have drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming in a lake at a holiday camp in Berny-Rivi re, northern France.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 6.30pm local time last night after a lifeless body was reportedly seen by a lifeguard at La Croix-du-Vieux Pont campsite.

Local media report the youngster was pulled from the water and airlifted to hospital in Paris, where he was tragically pronounced dead.

In a statement issued today the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was supporting the family, believed to be from East Yorkshire.

A spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British child who has died in France and are in contact with the French authorities."

La Croix-du-Vieux Pont campsite, which is situated around an hour and a half from Paris and the Disneyland resort, is popular with British tourists.

It boasts four pools, a beauty salon, bars, two restaurants and a kids club.

The campsite is owned by the European Camping Group and is used by a number of tour companies.

Eurocamp is one of the big tour operators that occupy positions on the site although the family involved in the incident were not travelling or staying with Eurocamp.

However, the firm has stepped in to try to offer any assistance they can and said it was doing its "utmost to support all parties involved in such a tragic incident".

A spokesperson said: "Eurocamp are profoundly saddened to learn of the tragic incident that occurred onsite at La Croix du Vieux Pont yesterday.

"Our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time.

"We are actively cooperating with the European Camping Group (the campsite operator), the tour operator with whom the family are travelling, and with local authorities to determine the precise circumstances that led to the accident."
