British boy, 11, recovers from coronavirus after two weeks in Vietnam hospital

A British boy has fully recovered from coronavirus after more than two weeks in hospital in Vietnam, sparking celebrations amongst frontline staff.

The 11-year-old dual national was given the all clear and released from a medical centre in Thanh Mien District, about 35 miles south-east of the capital Hanoi.

Health workers acted as if they were his parents to keep his spirits up while he was in isolation, the government said on Thursday as it shared photo of the child being handed a certificate.

The youngster tested positive and was put into quarantine on March 13 - four days after he arrived in Hanoi on a flight from London - and was admitted to an infectious disease ward on March 15.

He continued to test positive for the virus until two negative tests were taken on March 24 and 28, a spokesman for the country's health ministry said.

Doctors provided mental health support to him during his treatment while he displayed symptoms including a cough and fever.

He will now spend two weeks in quarantine at home as a precaution and officials will continue to monitor his health during that time, Tuoi Tre and VN Express reported.

He was the 64th patient to recover from Covid-19 in Vietnam.

Eleven patients, including a pregnant woman and a French national, were later discharged from a hospital in Hanoi.

Vietnam has 222 confirmed cases of coronavirus as of Thursday.

Of those, 43 are foreigners.

It was previously reported that more than a dozen Britons had tested positive for coronavirus in the country after arriving on flights from London and travelling around the country.

Officials had launched urgent searches for holidaymakers who were on flights with Vietnamese citizens and foreigners who tested positive.

Vietnam has not reported any deaths after testing about 70,000 people.

Social distancing measures will last until at least April 15 to curb the spread of the virus.

Britons returning from Vietnam should only self-isolate and call NHS 111 if they develop symptoms.
