British boxing suspended in January as Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Williams rescheduled

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) have suspended all fights in the United Kingdom in January due to coronavirus.

Their decision comes amid rising Omicron cases across the country and it means Chris Eubank Jr's fight with Welsh rival Liam Williams will need to be rescheduled once again.

The two fighters were due to face off on 29 January at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff after Williams, 29, suffered a shoulder injury ruling him out of competing on 11 December, the initial date for the bout.

This fresh postponement is a frustrating one for Eubank Jr, 32, who harbours ambitions of facing middleweight icon Gennady Golovkin later this year.

A new date for the grudge fight between the two Brits is yet to be announced.

The BBBofC have made their decision to allow doctors and medical experts to dedicate their services to the NHS.

"Following advice from the British Boxing Board of Control Medical Panel, Boxing tournaments under the jurisdiction of the BBBofC will be suspended for the month of January," the Board said in a statement.

"A further review by the Medical Panel and Stewards will take place prior to the planned recommencement of Boxing in February."

Eubank Jr has been training for the fight in Dubai and former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua paid a visit to the gym to cheer him on in training earlier this week.

The Englishman, a former super-middleweight and interim middleweight champion, shares a bitter rivalry with Williams, who was defeated by American Demetrius Andrade while fighting for the WBO middleweight belt last April.

"Respect is definitely not a word I would use in my feeling towards Liam," Eubank Jr said in December.

"He has said a lot of reckless feelings online and it doesn’t sit well with me.

"This is a grudge match and genuine domestic rivalry, the things he has said has made it personal.

"The things he has said, 'lowlife', 'scumbag' and 'cretin', these are the words that I can use to describe a man that talks the way he talks and he will eat his words soon enough.

"It seems he has come here today and take about respect but it has gone too far past that and he is going to get embarrassed."

With all British boxing suspended until next month at the earliest, fans will hope Amir Khan's fight with Kell Brook can go ahead as planned in Manchester on 19 February.

In the spring, Tyson Fury is expected to defend his WBC heavyweight champions against mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte and Joshua has activated a rematch clause in a bid to avenge his defeat by Oleksandr Usyk.
