British backpacker Amelia Bambridge drowned, post-mortem finds

Backpacker Amelia Bambridge drowned, police have said the day after her body was found at sea by a search team.

The 21-year-old from Worthing, West Sussex, was last seen on the Cambodian island of Koh Rong late on October 23.

Yesterday her family had their worst fears confirmed when Amelia was discovered in the sea.

Today Provincial Police Chief Chuon Narin confirmed the identity of the body and announced that an autopsy overseen by a British consular official ruled that Amela drowned.

He said there was no signs of foul play.

Her sister Sharon Shultes wrote an emotional tribute to her on the family's fundraising page.

She said: "I have had the most horrific confirmation that my sister Amelia Bambridge was found and she is no longer with us.

"It breaks my heart to let all my close family and friends know the horrendous outcome that we didn't want.

"Now we have to get our Amelia back home to England so we can lay her beautiful soul to rest and to remember the wonderful life she lived.

"Thank you for all the support we've had, please continue to do all you can so we can get all our family home with Amelia safely."

Amelia set off on her trip on September 27, when she flew to Vietnam, her family said.

They were alerted to her disappearance after she failed to check out of the Nest Beach Club hostel.

Her passport remained at the hostel.

Staff at Police Beach, a private venue that stages regular events, found Ms Bambridge's purple rucksack, containing her purse, phone and bank cards, the morning after she went missing.
