British Army could be used to help police in fight against Coronavirus

Military personnel could be ferried in by the Government to crackdown on people flouting Covid rules.

In an address to the nation tonight (Tuesday), the Prime Minister said: “We will put more police out on the streets and use the Army to backfill if necessary.

"And of course, I am deeply, spiritually reluctant to make any of these impositions or infringe anyone’s freedom.”

Bristol has seen a rise in coronavirus deniers, with protests being held and parents causing alarms at school gates by refusing to wear masks.

There's no detail yet about whether patrols in Bristol will be heightened to target people ignoring the rules.

Today, a raft of a fresh measures were announced by Mr Johnson.

Pubs, bars and restaurants across England will now be forced to close by 10pm each night.

And earlier, Johnson warned new coronavirus restrictions could last six months, with office staff working from home and the use of face masks enforced more widely.

The PM said during tonight's briefing, there would be difficult months ahead but there was "hope of a vaccine" and mass testing.

"That’s the hope; that’s the dream," he said. "It’s hard, but it’s attainable, and we are working as hard as we can to get there."

He added: "If we follow these simple rules together, we will get through this winter together. There are unquestionably difficult months to come.

"And the fight against Covid is by no means over. I have no doubt, however, that there are great days ahead.

"But now is the time for us all to summon the discipline, and the resolve, and the spirit of togetherness that will carry us through."
