British and Irish Lions vs Argentina LIVE!
The Lions have plenty of work to do ahead of their tour to Australia after falling to a shock defeat in their summer opener in Dublin. Andy Farrell’s side delivered an error-strewn display in a farewell fixture at the Aviva Stadium on Friday night, relinquishing the 1888 Cup as the Pumas celebrated their first-ever win over the Lions having triumphed 28-24 in a thriller.
Santiago Cordero got the winning score for Argentina, after Tadhg Beirne’s try had put the Lions back in front against 14 men with Mayco Vivas in the sin bin. Tomas Albornoz and Ignacio Mendy also went over for Felipe Contepomi’s men, with Albornoz also 13 more points in a man-of-the-match display.
Bundee Aki scored the first try of the summer for the Lions after early efforts by Luke Cowan-Dickie and Sione Tuipulotu were ruled out, while there was a penalty try and Fin Smith also kicked seven points but it wasn’t enough to avoid a disheartening loss ahead of a flight to Australia and their first tour match against Super Rugby’s Western Force in Perth next weekend.

Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:57Full-time
The ball is stripped and quickly driven into touch!
The final whistle sounds and Argentina wildly celebrate their first-ever win over the Lions in eight attempts, with a lot of key players missing, too.
The 1888 Cup is theirs and memories of that last-gasp disappointment from 2005 are blown away.
The men in red look utterly dejected as their summer begins with a disappointing defeat.
Plenty of work to do Down Under.

Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:55 , George Flood83 mins: Still we play on in Dublin as the Lions move the ball from right to left and back again in search of a last-gasp opening to snatch this famous win away from the Pumas.
One mistake and it’s all over.
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:54 , George Flood80 mins: The clock is in the red and it’s a hell of a long way for the Lions to try and drive the lineout maul.
Furlong will have a HIA after that high hit from Wenger.
Bealham back on for the closing seconds.
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:53 , George Flood79 mins: Wenger with a high hit on Furlong and the Lions have an advantage as the likes of the lively Hansen try to make metres with ball in hand.
An offside in there too as Fin Smith boots to touch on the edge of the Argentine 22.
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:51 , George Flood78 mins: Close to a charge down from Cummings before a great take in the air by Freeman gives possession back to the Lions with less than two minutes to play.
It’s now or never...
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:5076 mins: Argentina successfully defend the rolling maul without dragging it down this time, but they ship another penalty close to the line.
Schoeman thinks about a quick tap, three points obviously not enough for the Lions here.
Hang on, the referee has reversed the call after the TMO points out a neck roll from Beirne.
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:4875 mins: The scrum needs a reset, turning around the second time and a potentially costly infringement with the feet from Montoya gives the Lions the chance to kick into touch deep in the 22.
A poor mistake from the Pumas captain that could prove so decisive late on here.
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:45 , George Flood72 mins: Itoje has made way for Scott Cummings now.
The Lions aren’t really making much progress in their latest attack before they are awarded another penalty.
Scrum.
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:43 , George Flood70 mins: No they can’t, with a hasty Argentina clearance after a poor Kelleher overthrow going into the hands and spilled forward by Freeman.

Can the Lions make this pressure count?
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:40 , George Flood67 mins: Into the final 15 minutes in Dublin and the Lions are starting to show some nerves as the errors and questionable decisions creep back in.
They end up with the put-in at the scrum after diligent work from captain Itoje.
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:38 , George Flood66 mins: Another important interception from Albornoz, who has been utterly brilliant for Argentina tonight.
Marcus Smith leading the Lions’ attempts to hit back again.
We should also say that Elliot Daly has replaced Aki.
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:36 , George Flood63 mins: Joaquin Moro has replaced Franco Molina in the Pumas’ second row.

Mack Hansen has also replaced Van der Merwe, who is having his ankle iced on the bench.
Lions 24-28 Argentina
21:35 , George Flood61 mins: Albornoz is here, there and everywhere for Argentina, showing superb composure to intercept a chip down the Lions’ left flank from Freeman.
Pollock had so nearly broken free just moments before.
TRY! Lions 24-28 Argentina | Santiago Cordero 59'
21:28 , George Flood59 mins: Simply sensational from the Pumas!
There’s a crucial missed tackle up the pitch from Pollock on Albornoz, who sells a dummy before Argentina are away.
They work the ball quickly through the hands wonderfully before a searching kick forward.
It’s picked up by Cordero, who goes over to put his side back in front.
The excellent Albornoz adds the conversion.
Lions 24-21 Argentina
21:27 , George Flood57 mins: Thought Mack Hansen might be coming on for Freeman there but the Northampton star continues.
A crucial last-ditch intervention then likely saves another try as Freeman shakes off that knock to charge into the 22.
Lions 24-21 Argentina
21:25 , George Flood56 mins: Matias Moroni is on for his 75th cap for Argentina.
Lucio Cinti off.
Lions 24-21 Argentina

TRY! Lions 24-21 Argentina | Tadhg Beirne | 53'
21:20 , George Flood53 mins: The Lions have their go-ahead try!
Williams has been brilliant since coming on and tees up Genge for an outstanding line break.
They keep up the pace and attack through the forwards, the ball eventually spun for Beirne to go through.
Fin Smith converts and the Lions lead by three now with just over 25 minutes to play in Dublin.
Lions 17-21 Argentina
21:18 , George Flood50 mins: Some ferocious carrying from the likes of Genge as the Lions begin to find their groove.
The Lions now look dangerous with ball in hand in attack, but there’s a mistake from Fin Smith to halt their momentum.
Lions 17-21 Argentina
21:17 , George Flood49 mins: Morgan makes way for Pollock.
The only two Welshmen in the entire Lions squad are now on as Tomos Williams replaces Mitchell at scrum-half.

A debut for Boris Wenger as he replaces Oviedo in the back row.
The Lions continue their scrum dominance and earn another penalty.
Here comes Henry Pollock for his Lions debut.
PENALTY TRY! Lions 17-21 Argentina
21:11 , George Flood46 mins: Patience at last from the Lions as they eventually earn a penalty that is kicked deep into touch.
They get the rolling maul going and its brought down by Pumas loosehead Vivas, who receives a yellow card for his troubles.
Argentina ship the try and are down to 14 men. How important a moment could that be in the context of this game?
Lions 10-21 Argentina
21:10 , George Flood43 mins: Still scrappy and disjointed in the opening moments of the second half from the Lions.
Mendy is down injured for the Pumas and I’m not sure he’s going to be able to continue.
The vastly-experienced Santiago Cordero is entering the fray.
Lions 10-21 Argentina
21:06 , George FloodScrum coach John Fogarty tells Sky Sports that the Lions made too many errors in that first half and did not respond well.
He complains of a lack of energy from Andy Farrell’s side.
Back underway at the Aviva. A big 40 minutes ahead.
Lions 10-21 Argentina
21:04 , George FloodSuch a great try from Benetton’s Ignacio Mendy, an Olympic bronze medal winner with Argentina in rugby sevens.

Lions 10-21 Argentina
20:52Half-time
Well, who saw this coming?
The Lions trail by 11 points after a disappointing and rather disjointed first half in Dublin.
Plenty of work to do after the break.

TRY! Lions 10-21 Argentina | Tomas Albornoz 41'
20:50 , George Flood41 mins: Wow!
The ball is knocked loose at the breakdown during a scruffy Lions attack.
It’s kicked forward before being scooped up by fly-half Albornoz, who turns on the jets to streak home and register Argentina’s second try of the game on the stroke of half-time.
He adds the conversion too. Lions shellshocked!
PENALTY! Lions 10-14 Argentina | Tomas Albornoz 39'
20:48 , George Flood39 mins: He was never missing that kick.
The Pumas are gaining in confidence in Dublin.
Lions 10-11 Argentina
20:47 , George Flood38 mins: The Lions are defending desperately a couple of metres in front of their line, with a couple of brilliant tackles to stop Matera and Vivas in their tracks.
But they are eventually whistled for offside and Albornoz will have a simply penalty to stretch the Pumas’ lead to four points before the interval.
Lions 10-11 Argentina
20:45 , George Flood35 mins: The Lions’ defence is being tested and turned around at the moment as Argentina put boot to ball with some dangerous and well-measured grubber kicks in behind.
One bobbles dangerously down the right flank before another from Garcia is scooped up by Marcus Smith, who is driven over his own line by Harlequins team-mate Rodrigo Isgro.
Lions 10-11 Argentina
20:43 , George Flood34 mins: TMO check for Pumas tighthead Joel Sclavi’s arms-free clearout on Morgan as he won that penalty for the Lions, following a great joint tackle from Curry and Bealham.
It stays as only a penalty.
Lions 10-11 Argentina
20:4033 mins: Pumas number eight Joaquin Oviedo breaks into space before being scythed down, with Jac Morgan straight over the ball in trademark fashion.
Argentina are whistled for not releasing and the Lions can boom a pressure-relieving penalty downfield.
Lions 10-11 Argentina
20:39 , George Flood31 mins: Pumas scrum-half Gonzalo Garcia with an impressive clearance under pressure there.
Argentina have not really had much chance to attack with ball in hand since that early Mendy try.
They are losing the battle up front, despite their slender advantage on the scoreboard.
Lions 10-11 Argentina
20:37 , George Flood29 mins: Too many errors from both sides at the moment in what is becoming a rather scrappy affair, Freeman thundering into contact but he can’t provide an accurate enough offload for Aki and it’s spilled forward.
Lions 10-11 Argentina
20:36 , George Flood28 mins: The Lions are certainly in the ascendancy at scrum time at the moment as Pumas loosehead Mayco Vivas is pinged for collapsing under serious pressure from Bealham.
PENALTY! Lions 10-11 Argentina | Tomas Albornoz 26'
20:3326 mins: The Pumas wrestle back the lead with a second penalty of the night off the boot of Tomas Albornoz.
Lions whistled for a needless infringement at the ruck.
Lions 10-8 Argentina
20:31 , George Flood23 mins: Fin Smith is hit high by Argentina flanker Pablo Matera, who could be in trouble here.
But referee James Doleman decides it’s a penalty only for the Lions, ruling there was not enough time for the Pumas forward to change his approach.
TRY! Lions 10-8 Argentina | Bundee Aki 18'
20:25 , George Flood18 mins: At the third time of asking in the first quarter of this game, the Lions finally have their opening try.
They attack left after the scrum before resetting and quickly whipping the ball back right, showing lovely attacking shape and superb fast hands.
Aki fakes a pass and then drives through three Pumas defenders to burrow over.
Fin Smith adds the extras and the Lions are now ahead by two.
Lions 3-8 Argentina
20:22 , George Flood17 mins: A wonderful move off the lineout from the Lions and Tuipulotu weaves in to dive over the line.
But there were a couple of knock-ons in there and this one won’t stand either.
More early frustration for the men in red.
But they have a scrum in front of the posts so will come again very quickly.
Lions 3-8 Argentina
20:20 , George Flood15 mins: The Lions are eager to hit back quickly and will have another lineout deep in the Pumas’ 22 after Argentina are pinged at the scrum for not driving straight.
TRY! Lions 3-8 Argentina | Ignacio Mendy 12'
20:17 , George Flood12 mins: That one will count!
Scintillating attacking play from the Pumas, with the Lions all at sea in defence as Carreras tees up Mendy, who steps inside wonderfully and leaves Van der Merwe in the dust before touching down.
Albornoz hooks the conversion wide left, so 8-3 it remains.
PENALTY! Lions 3-3 Argentina | Fin Smith 10'
20:15 , George Flood10 mins: Level in Dublin after some more great attacking play by the Lions led by Van der Merwe, who combines brilliantly with Freeman.
Fin Smith tries a cross-field diagonal with an advantage, but it’s a great take in the air to keep the Lions at bay.
Smith ends up kicking his first three points for the Lions.
Lions 0-3 Argentina
20:11 , George Flood8 mins: NO TRY!
The early Lions score is chalked off for a knock-on.
A let-off for the Pumas.
Lions 0-3 Argentina
20:11 , George Flood8 mins: Cowan-Dickie thinks he has scored the first try of this Lions summer after breaking away from the maul and dotting down.
Or did he? He looks like he’s spilled this as we go to a TMO decision.
Lions 0-3 Argentina
20:09 , George Flood6 mins: The Lions break through for the first time in attack as the formidable Van der Merwe carves his way through.
The pressure is sustained and the hosts have a lineout deep into Argentine territory.
PENALTY! Lions 0-3 Argentina | Tomas Albornoz 5'
20:07 , George Flood5 mins: First blood to the Pumas in Dublin.
Argentina power towards the line after edging the early kicking battle, forcing the Lions to ship a penalty.
They point to the posts and fly-half Tomas Albornoz makes a simple kick.
Lions 0-0 Argentina
20:05 , George Flood3 mins: The two sides test each other out with plenty of booming kicks early on.
The ball is staying in play throughout the first few minutes, with Argentina now keeping it in hand and charging into the Lions 22.
Andy Farrell’s defence is being sorely tested already here with the Pumas now just a couple of metres from the try line...
Lions vs Argentina
20:02 , George FloodUnderway at the Aviva Stadium!
Can the Lions kick off the summer with a statement victory?
Here we go...
No shortage of passion there as usual.
We’ll be underway very shortly, with New Zealand’s James Doleman the referee for tonight.
Itoje with one final inspiring message to his players.
Here come the teams
19:58 , George FloodMaro Itoje has the long-serving Lions’ stuffed toy mascot BIL - the responsibility of Henry Pollock on tour - in hand as he leads out the side for the first time.
A proud moment for the England skipper.
Julian Montoya leads out the Pumas, fresh from Leicester’s heartbreaking Premiership final defeat by Bath at Twickenham last weekend.
Time for the Argentine national anthem.

Night of firsts for the Lions in Dublin
19:46 , George FloodIt’s a night of firsts for the Lions at the Aviva Stadium.
Not only is this their first-ever match in Dublin, but the hosts will also have player names on the back of their shirts for the very first time.
That might take a little while for the traditionalists among us to get used to...

Andy Farrell: Lions Test places up for grabs
19:28Andy Farrell has challenged tonight’s Lions players to stake a claim for a Test berth against Argentina.
There is so much competition in this star-studded squad and the head coach insists it’s wide open ahead of the three-match series against Australia next month.
"I did an exercise a couple of weeks ago, and I've done it about five times since, of choosing what the Test side could be," Farrell said this week.
"You actually can't even go there because there's such good competition and that's how it should be.
"The exciting thing about Friday night is these guys get to show the team-mates who are sat in the stand what they're all about.
"We are looking for cohesion, connection and an ability to attack the game from the off.
"You can give yourself any excuse as far as time together is concerned, but we've had good prep and if you want to be a good Lions player you've got to hit your straps straight from the off."

Argentina could prove Lions' toughest challenge before Tests
19:12Despite Argentina’s absentees, there is an argument to say that tonight could well turn out to be the toughest challenge that the Lions face before their three-Test series against Australia, that begins in Brisbane on July 19.
The Pumas are currently ranked at No5 in the world and beat all of South Africa, New Zealand, France and Australia in 2024, putting almost 70 points on the latter in a Rugby Championship drubbing.
The Lions twice visited Argentina all the way back in 1927 and 1936, with all six matches won by the tourists.
The sides last met in 2005, when Jonny Wilkinson’s late penalty rescued a 25-25 draw for Clive Woodward’s disappointing Lions against a depleted Pumas team in Cardiff ahead of a miserable tour to New Zealand in which they lost every Test.
Argentina will be itching to make this another damp squib of a Lions send-off in Dublin.

Argentina out to spoil Lions farewell party
18:54 , George FloodArgentina have named a strong team for tonight as they warm up for their two-Test home series against a weakened England side next month.
The Pumas are captained by departing Leicester skipper Julian Montoya and also start Gloucester’s Bath-bound star Santiago Carreras, plus Saracens pair Juan Martin Gonzalez and Lucio Cinti.
Pumas coach Felipe Contepomi is, though, without a number of key players based in France as the Top 14 reaches a thrilling conclusion, including the likes of Juan Cruz Mallia, Guido Petti, Tomas Lavanini, Santiago Chocobares, Mateo Carreras and more.
Bautista Bernasconi, Boris Wenger and Simon Benitez Cruz are all poised to earn their debuts off a mixed bench that also has plenty of experience in the likes of Santiago Cordero and Matias Moroni.

Stage is set
18:42The calm before the storm at a sunny Aviva Stadium, where the temperature is currently around 25 degrees.
This place should be absolutely bouncing later on.

Lions hit back at Schmidt over 'southern hemisphere centres' dig
18:35 , George FloodJoe Schmidt’s comments on Aki and Tuipulotu earned a swift rebuke from Richard Wigglesworth, Steve Borthwick’s No2 with England who is one of six coaches joining Andy Farrell on the Lions tour, along with Johnny Sexton, John Dalziel, Simon Easterby, John Fogarty and Andrew Goodman.
"I don't know if they are questioning their commitment,” Wigglesworth said yesterday,
“Everyone has earned the right to pull on the Lions jersey.
"They are, to a man, incredibly proud to be here.
"It is not your background or how you have got here, it's what sort of player you are and what sort of man you are.
“We have got great men and great players."

Schmidt aims 'southern hemisphere centres' dig at Lions
18:23Aki and Tuipulotu starting together in the Lions midfield led to a cheeky dig from Joe Schmidt this week after he named his Australia squad for a warm-up Test against Fiji next month.
“A southern hemisphere centre partnership that will be pretty formidable,” said Schmidt, who coached Aki during his time as head coach with Ireland.
However, he added: “I coached Bundee for several years and know him really well and respect him massively as a player. He's a great contributor to the team environment.
"I've only had glancing conversations with Sione but again, by all accounts a champion bloke.
“You don't get to be captain of a national team without being a great bloke and really professional in those high-performance environments.”

Aki and Tuipulotu form formidable Lions centre partnership
18:09 , George FloodThere are plenty of talking points in Andy Farrell’s Lions team selection for tonight, but unquestionably the most eye-catching partnership is in the centres.
Farrell has gone for a formidable duo of Ireland powerhouse Bundee Aki at 12 and Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu at 13.
Some people believe them to be rivals for the Test jersey at inside centre, while others are adamant that they can combine to be the most effective midfield pair to take on an Australia backline that should feature the likes of star Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii - who says he is now “97 per cent” recovered from jaw surgery - and Len Ikitau.
It will be fascinating to see how they operate together against Argentina, with no shortage of other centre options in the wider Lions squad including the likes of Huw Jones and Garry Ringrose.
Tuipulotu of course only made his return for Glasgow in May after a pectoral injury that kept him out for four months, missing the whole Six Nations and sparking fears over his Lions involvement.

Furlong on bench as Bealham starts following late call-up
18:00 , George FloodIt’s been a whirlwind week or so for Ireland’s Australia-born prop Finlay Bealham, who wasn’t one of the 21 forwards included in Andy Farrell’s original 38-man Lions squad named in a special event held at London’s O2 Arena last month, but was belatedly called in as a replacement for the injured Zander Fagerson and now finds himself as the starting tighthead tonight with Will Stuart not involved yet following Bath’s Premiership final triumph.
Potentially the most important selection in the entire squad in Dublin this evening is that of Tadhg Furlong, on the bench having not played in the URC Grand Final for Leinster last weekend.
He has been dogged by a recurring calf injury all season and played just once in the Six Nations, with more concerning reports circulating about his fitness in recent weeks.
Furlong will be desperate to come on and make an impact to prove that he can be the Lions Test starter once again, having fulfilled that role in each of the last six Tests across the last two tours in South Africa and New Zealand.

Heavy England presence in first Lions team of summer
17:52 , George FloodThere are nine Englishmen in tonight’s first Lions XV of the summer, including tour captain Maro Itoje.
The Smiths will both be eager to make an impression, with Fin at fly-half after his incredible rise in 2025 and Marcus operating at full-back once more.
Likewise Alex Mitchell, though presumed locked-in test starter at scrum-half, Gibson-Park, is thought to only have a minor problem.
Ellis Genge joins Cowan-Dickie in the front row, with Tom Curry at blindside flanker, Ben Earl at number eight and Tommy Freeman on the wing.
Lions veteran Elliot Daly is on the bench, along with man of the moment Henry Pollock.

Lions missing 14 players after Premiership and URC finals
17:45 , George FloodRonan Kelleher is the only one of the 15 Lions players involved in last week’s domestic league finals to feature in the squad tonight, backing up starter Luke Cowan-Dickie as the bench hooker.
12 of his URC champion Leinster team-mates are not taking part after only joining camp in Dublin this week, along with Premiership-winning Bath duo Finn Russell and Will Stuart, plus Leicester’s Ollie Chessum.
Andy Farrell picks almost entirely from the players that were in Portugal last week for a training camp, though has lost Scotland tighthead Zander Fagerson for the duration of the summer with a calf injury.
Jamison Gibson-Park was a late scratch from the URC Grand Final against the Bulls due to a glute issue, while fellow Ireland international Hugo Keenan has also been dealing with a knock.

British and Irish Lions vs Argentina prediction
17:38 , George FloodThe Lions are hardly likely to be firing on all cylinders for their first game of the summer, with so many moving parts still and a number of key players to be properly integrated into the fold after last weekend’s domestic club finals.
However, they will still be looking to send a clear early message to the Wallabies with a confident win in Dublin and have more than enough firepower to get the job done.
But underestimate Argentina at your peril - the Pumas are always a granite-tough match-up regardless of the circumstance and will be itching to make it a damp squib of a send-off as they warm up for England’s visit, though are missing a number of important players themselves.
The biggest hope for Andy Farrell will be no major injuries after Alun Wyn Jones’ tour-ending setback in the previous 1888 Cup fixture against Japan at Murrayfield ahead of the trip to South Africa in 2021.
Lions to win, by at least 10 points.
