The British and Irish Lions are investigating the feasibility of launching a women’s team thanks to a new partnership and funding provided by Royal London.
The company has come on board from Monday, International Women’s Day, as the ‘Principal Partner’ of the Women’s Lions Programme.
Through the partnership, Royal London is investing in the future of women’s rugby in the UK and Ireland by supporting research and analysis that could help it continue to grow.
Royal London will fund and participate in a feasibility study which will examine whether a Lions women’s team could be formed.
The Lions have existed since the 19th century, touring as a men’s side, and they are due to head to South Africa this summer.
The prospect of a women’s team has been mooted in the past, but the injection of funding and further research into it boosts the chances of it happening.
British & Irish Lions Managing Director, Ben Calveley, said: “The feasibility study is an important first step in determining whether a women’s Lions team could be established, and we are very grateful to have Royal London’s support and investment.”
