British and Irish Lions 2021: Rassie Erasmus says there is "no threat" to Lions tour

South Africa director of rugby Rassie Erasmus says there is "no threat" to the British and Irish Lions Tests in South Africa after his side returned three positive Covid results.

The entire Springboks squad are now self-isolating in Johannesburg.

The Lions squad travelled to South Africa on Sunday evening with their first Test on 24th July.

They will play their first three matches and last two Tests in the region of Gauteng which has been badly hit by Covid, with the area having a curfew, a ban on large gatherings and a ban on alcohol sales.

"I don't think it's a big cause for concern," Erasmus said.

"But we want to keep everybody as safe as possible."

Erasmus is confident there will be no problems for South Africa's Tests against Georgia or the Lions tour.

"There is no threat to either the Tests against Georgia or the Lions tour."

He said his team followed all the necessary protocols since their three-week conditioning camp in Bloemfontein began.

Scrum-half Herschel Jantjies, prop Vincent Koch and wing S'bu Nkosi were named as the three players who had tested positive.

It is understood they will be retested in the coming days.

"If they are positive it is a case of being unlucky, not anything that they might have done wrong," Erasmus said.

Warren Gatland's team travel to the rainbow nation for an eight-game tour that will see them play the world champions in three Test games.

The Lions squad will be without captain Alun Wyn Jones after he suffered a dislocated shoulder against Japan on Saturday with ireland ace Conor Murray the new Lions skipper.
