British Airways planes 'sabotaged by disgruntled workers' who covered them in foam

British Airways has been left with a huge cleaning bill after two aircraft ended up covered in foam - with insiders claiming disgruntled employees did it deliberately.

Footage shows five tons of fire retardant on the Boeing 777 and 787 at Heathrow Airport over the weekend.

It comes after the company announced that up to 12,000 jobs were at risk - and some of the engineers affected were at the airport when the incident happened.

BA has, however, said it was an accident.

An insider told The Sun : "There's a lot of p***** off people at BA at the moment and suddenly two of their jets have been ruined."

They said it would take "weeks" to clear up the mess, saying it had "ruined the tools, aircraft, everything in sight".

And the source continued: "BA staff claimed sabotage. There is so much anger."

The airline has instead said it was a technical problem, blaming fire prevention systems.

A BA spokesman said: “One of our fire prevention systems experienced a technical issue, causing foam to be dispersed.”

In a letter to unions on Thursday, International Airlines Group (IAG), the airline's owner, said 1,130 jobs will be lost out of its 4,346 pilot workforce.

Under the plan, BA will cut 1,130 captain and co-pilot jobs from its headcount of 4,346, the IAG-owned airline's head of flight operations told the BALPA union in the letter.

"In a short space of time the situation has significantly deteriorated," the April 28 letter reads, adding that BA may yet be forced to suspend the few services still running from London Heathrow.

"There are no clear signs of improvement in air passenger demand," it added.
