British Airways passengers' fury as broken curtain grounds Gatwick flight

Passengers were stuck on a flight for an extra three hours partly because a curtain rail was faulty, it has been claimed.

The British Airways flight from Seville to London was delayed due to an issue with the fabric divider between business and economy class, it has been reported.

One irate customer called the situation "ridiculous" after the flight took off at 2.45pm Spanish time rather than the scheduled 11.30am.

At first staff told customers that the delay was due to foggy weather, before explaining that the curtain was to blame, the Evening Standard reported.

Part of the rail curtain was loose meaning it was a potential hazard, it was reported.

A traveller named William found himself among those affected.

He tweeted shortly before 1pm on Monday: “Sitting at Seville airport waiting for a delayed flight. Cause of delay…the curtain between business and euro traveller is broken. Really? Also absolutely no communication from the airport or BA staff”.

Another person stuck onboard said that one passenger urged staff to cut the curtain off.

They told the Standard they had "never heard anything so ridiculous before as an excuse for a delay."

BA said that the delay was partly due to the aircraft being diverted to another airport on an earlier journey due to poor visibility.

"We apologised to customers for the delay to their flight which was caused by the aircraft diverting to an alternative airport on its previous journey due to poor visibility," a spokesperson said.

It is not unheard of for flights to be delayed, cancelled or even turned around due to a relatively harmless seeming reason.

In 2015 a BA flight was turned around because of the horrible smell coming from the passenger toilet in what is now an iconic aviation event.

Cabin crew desperately tried to prevent the foul odour emanating from an overflowing toilet but failed.

As the smell became unbearable for nearby passengers, the captain was forced to announce that the flight was being aborted.

Above Brussels, the plane abruptly turned around and headed back to Heathrow amid health and safety concerns.

Outraged passenger Abhishek Sachdev, who was on board tweeted: "Insane! Our BA flight to Dubai returned back to Heathrow because of a smelly poo in the toilet! 15hrs until next flight... #britishairways."
