Though British Airways staff on the plane which left Heathrow Airport this afternoon were "calm" during the drama, they struggled to open the emergency doors, Mrs Brown added.

Footage shows one air hostess on the internal communication device desperate to converse with a colleague.

Mrs Brown, of Stoke Newington, north-east London, said: "We were sat near an emergency exit actually. They were struggling to open the emergency doors because they were that stiff.

"Air hostesses were trying to communicate but you couldn't see anything.

"It happened suddenly. The plane was pretty full too, with lots of families and young children."

The passengers were taken inside a terminal after the landing.

And they remain there, waiting further communication about their luggage.

"There is not much communication," the mum-of-four said.

"We are still waiting to find out what happened.
