British Airways flight sets new record for fastest New York to London journey

A British Airways plane has set a new record for the fastest New York to London flight thanks to an extremely powerful jet stream.

The plane touched down at London Heathrow four hours and 56 minutes after taking off from New York's JFK Airport.

It was two hours ahead of schedule.

A jet stream exceeding 250mph acted to accelerate the flight as it travelled over the Atlantic in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The extreme weather conditions occurred as Storm Ciara bears down on Britain, triggering very strong winds and heavy rain.

BA confirmed the new record.

"We always prioritise safety over speed records, but our highly trained pilots made the most of the conditions to get customers back to London well ahead of time," a spokesperson said.

Shortly after the flight's arrival, a Fly Norwegian aircraft was close to completing a record-setting journey for the same route, looking set to shave even more time off the new record.

However, the flight was then diverted to Copenhagen after a missed approach.

Fly Norwegian held the record that stood before the British Airways flight this morning.

The British Airways flight is one of many taking advantage of the jet stream to get its passengers to their destination at a faster rate.

Meanwhile, planes travelling the opposite way were reportedly suffering, with strong headwinds significantly delaying some arrival times.
