British aircraft carriers including the Queen Elizabeth get new vegan menus

Sailors on our aircraft carriers are getting a new taste of life at sea – with vegan meals.

Menus with plant-based options have been unveiled on massive sister ships Prince of Wales and Queen Elizabeth following trials to assess demand.

Vegans make up 1.6 per cent of the population, equivalent to 11 full-time sailors on each ship.

The £3billion vessels each have around 700 aboard, a number which will more than double when air crews are added in.

Chefs now serve up vegan pasties, falafel, plant burgers, lentil lasagne and other treats including apple pies with custard made from coconut milk.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that a six-week menu was now available.

It is understood vegan meals are now being made available on all ships throughout the fleet.

An MoD spokesman said: “Healthy living in the Armed Forces is of vital importance and we encourage a nutritious diet.”

It comes just months after top brass were forced to source uniforms and kit that are free of leather or wool.

Policy was changed after a test case in which a helicopter technician objected to leather boots.

The number of UK vegans has doubled since 2016 but is still only around 600,000. It is not known how many there are in the Navy.
