Britian's Got Talent star Paul Potts addresses 'sulking' claims following result

Britian's Got Talent star Paul Potts has hit back at critics who said he was 'sulking' when he failed to make it through to the next round of 'The Champions' series.

The tenor returned to the ITV talent show for its brand new super series on Saturday night which sees previous winners and other memorable acts take to the stage once again in a bid to become the ultimate winner.

But despite winning the first ever series of BGT back in 2007, Paul had a "shaky start" to his performance critiqued judge Simon Cowell and even though he received a standing ovation following his performance, the 48-year-old didn't make it through to the final.

The judges - Simon, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams - appeared shocked by the result.

Even Amanda could be heard questioning: "What about Paul Potts?" after it was announced that American daredevil father and daughter duo Bello and Annaliese Nock and golden buzzer choice, Sand artist Kseniya Simonova, were the acts going through.

Even the judges were surprised by the result (ITV)

Hitting back at negative comments following his performance, the Mirror reports that Paul told his social media followers what may have been to blame for his performance in since deleted tweets: "Was little frustrated with myself as after 15 run throughs, Production gave me a change of camera direction on my way to the stage &it left me looking for the camera that came from different direction.

"Shouldn't have allowed that to make me think, as I need to feel when performing."

It has been 12 years since Paul won the first ever series (ITV)

The former winner also defended himself against those who claimed he was 'sulking' when hosts Ant and Dec announced the results.

Alongside an image of him in his first BGT audition 12 years ago, Paul wrote: "To those that thought I was sulking - that's what I look like most of the time lol I can prove it with this still from the original audition: I don't do fake smiles, but it doesn't mean I am grumpy sulky or feeling entitled."

"That's my usual look lol. I was so sulky that I didn't storm out of the arena and stayed to have photographs and give autographs to those who asked."

Other contestants to feature on the first episode were Connie Talbot, Ashleigh and Sully and Boogie Storm.

Eight acts will perform each week with only two going through to the final on October 5.

Britain's Got Talent: The Champions continues on Saturday at 8pm on ITV.
