Britannia hotels lay off staff at popular Merseyside hotel

One of the UK's largest hotel chains has reportedly laid off staff at one Merseyside hotel.

Staff at the Scarisbrick Hotel in Southport have reportedly received letters informing them that they are to be made redundant citing the impact of coronavirus on the hospitality sector.

In the redundancy letter, seen by the ECHO, Britannia Hotels said that the lay offs were being made due to "unprecedented times" in the hospitality sector and would take effect next month.

An accompanying email sent by Britannia stated that "the effect of Covid-19 has had on the hospitality industry and Britannia Hotels is catastrophic.

"As a company we are deeply saddened that we are having to terminate your employment."

One former employee at the Scarisbrick Hotel, who did not wish to be named, told the ECHO : "Every member of staff at the hotel has worked so hard and Britannia have just let us all go.

"They even put on their Facebook page that they are looking forward to opening their hotels again on July 4th.

"In my view, Britannia have not given their employees any thought. They just seem to be out for themselves."

Britannia owns many hotels in Liverpool and the wider city region including the Adelphi Hotel.

Britannia Hotels was approached for comment.
