Britain set for coldest December in a decade as Met Office issues weather warnings

Britain could be set for the coldest December in a decade as weather warnings for flooding are in place for tomorrow.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for heavy rain leading to localised flooding in parts of Scotland for Monday and Tuesday.

The warning is to come into effect on Monday evening and last until Tuesday night.

Tuesday's weather forecast for the North East predicts that there could be snow as experts say December has not been colder than average since 2010's Big Freeze.

The forecast for the North East this week is: "Cold and wet Tuesday, with rain and hill snow, probably gradually improving on Wednesday.

"Thursday perhaps starting dry but rather cold and cloudy, probably becoming milder, wet and windy later."

Leon Brown, head of meteorological operations at The Weather Company’s Weather Channel arm, said: “Arctic incursions mean December could well be the coldest for a number of years.”

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “Winter hazards are dominating the weather as the emphasis changes from snow to frost and ice.

“The UK will stay in cold air north of the jet stream.”

A Met Office forecaster said: “December 10-19 has temperatures likely to begin below average, trend to average then could turn colder again.

“December 20 to January 3 has temperatures likely at or below-average, though some milder interludes are possible.

"Hill snow is possible, and showers could perhaps be wintry at lower levels.”

The UK's average December temperature is 3.8C. Many recent Decembers have been mild.
