The British people have spoken. The Staffordshire bull terrier is officially the top dog of 2019.
ITV viewers had the chance to vote for their favourite breed out of a possible 10 during a two-and-a-half hour live show.
As the mammoth broadcast reached its end, an adorable Staffie – held by Ben Fogle – was crowned our top furry friend over a cute cockapoo.
Our dog-loving nation dethroned the Labrador to make way for the new top breed in town, although Labradors still made it into the top 10.
Joining them angling for the coveted number one were seven other breeds – Mixed Breeds, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Border Collies, Boxers, Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels.
All over the nation, dogs curled up with their owners to watch the canine countdown as viewers were taught facts and characteristics about the animals.
The show also featured talking heads, including King of the Jungle Harry Redknapp.
Redknapp, who won the most recent series of I’m A Celebrity, featured with his pooches Lulu and Barney to chat about life with his four-legged friends.
The former football manager also shared pictures fans had sent him of their dogs mesmerised by the screen during the show.
Also featured were actress Gemma Atkinson, Penny Lancaster and Olympian Nicola Adams. Coronation Street’s Sue Cleaver had a doggie DNA test done on George during the broadcast, revealing he was a 100 per cent Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
