Britain's six most haunted pubs where pints levitate and people are 'pushed'

From levitating pint pots to shadowy spectres, these pubs are home to a host of regulars that have outstayed their welcome - by a few centuries.

One boozer is said to be home to the spirit of a little boy called Billy who enjoys playing games, and another has been haunted by a poltergeist priest, 2Chill reports.

Greater Manchester is home to a number of pubs said to be haunted, not surprising considering how far some of the buildings in the city date back.

These six historic pubs are full of terrors and tales, so pull up a bar stool and order a pint, if you dare.

Ye Olde Man and Scythe, Bolton

Ye Olde Man and Scythe, Bolton (Vincent Cole)

One of the oldest pubs in Britain, this Bolton local is located on Churchgate Street and is these days more known for its jam nights than its ghostly goings on.

But a visit to this pub might give you more than you bargained for with an unwelcome encounter with the Seventh Earl of Derby, James Stanley, who was executed just outside.

The Earl - whose family are said to have once owned the pub - spent his final hours here before being beheaded for his part in the Bolton Massacre where more than 1,000 were killed.

The chair he is said to have sat on is said to still be in the pub to this day.

A pub that has been in the same hands for five decades, with 91-year-old landlady Nancy celebrating the milestone earlier this year, Peveril of the Peak is another pub said to be haunted.

While it might be a must for those on the hunt for ghosts, the presence at this Manchester pub is said to be a much more well-behaved resident - it hasn’t put the current owners off anyway.

And with tales of pint glasses levitating and finding their own way to the pot wash, it’s not hard to see why. This ghost is basically an unpaid member of staff.

The Ring O’ Bells Pub

This Middleton pub is another that is said to be haunted, not surprising considering it dates back to the 12th century and on the site of an ancient Druid temple.

Regulars at the pub have apparently reported sightings of glasses sliding along the bar as well as sightings of the actual ghost himself, known as the Sad Cavalier nicknamed Edward.

It sounds like he’s also been making his presence known by stomping loudly on the floor and making some strange grunting noises.

The Shakespeare

This city centre pub is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young girl with varying tales about how she met her end.

Some say that she set herself alight while lighting candles, others say that she was murdered by an evil chef, and there is also the story of how she set herself alight after being attacked by the chef. Who knows which, if any, are true.

There are also tales of the chef hanging himself after attacking the girl and being unable to live with what he had done.

Apparently, the rope marks are still visible to this day.

Albert’s Schloss

This Bavarian-style beer house, formerly Brannigan's, is another city centre bar said to have some ghouly goings on, this time by a ghost not so welcoming of guests, it even appeared on Most Haunted.

This city centre watering hole was previously a chapel, with the Reverend Samuel Collier said to be the one scaring visitors.

There has even been some poltergeist activity with reports of staff claiming something try to push them down the stairs.

The Bate Hall

While not in Manchester itself, The Bate Hall, in Macclesfield, is less than an hour away from Manchester and well worth a visit if you’re wanting to experience something from another world, it’s regularly topped Higgypop’s top 100 most haunted locations in the UK.

As well as a well-stocked bar and hearty pub grub, there’s a lot more on the menu besides, previously described as being overrun with ghosts.

There’s been reports of staff being touched, glasses going flying and dark shadowy figures lurking about the place, although much of the activity has been either in the residential area above or down in the cellar.

But on a lighter note, according to the owner their daughter has been known to play hide and seek with a boy named Billy.

There is also said to be an evil character named Richard taking residence.
