Britain's 'rarest' 50p enters circulation - and it could be worth thousands

Britain's rarest fifty-pence-piece has just entered circulation - and if you land yourself one, you could end up thousands richer.

That's because the Royal Mint has this week released its latest Peter Rabbit edition - and to get hold of one, you'll have to pay £10.

However, the people behind the PR stunt The Great British Coin Hunt are putting 400 originally non-released Peter Rabbit 2019 50p's into general circulation all over the country, giving the public the chance to own one at face value.

From this month, they'll be turning up in coffee shops, parking meters and vending machines, according to DevonLive.

The coins can bought from the Royal Mint for £10 - you can also pick up a Silver Proof for £65 or a Gold Proof version for £795.

The Royal Mint said the Peter Rabbit 2019 coin is "commemorative" coin, adding that they would "not be entering general circulation" when they were released.

But that doesn't stop people who have bought them spending them in a shop themselves.

Kellie, one of the Great British Coin Hunt team, said: "We are circulating the 2019 Peter Rabbit. We're hoping we're going to get 40 volunteers to help us do this around the country.

"I'm in Devon this weekend visiting the family, so I'm circulating the coins around this area."

Everything you need to know about the rarest 50p coins in Britain

It all started last week when 'The Great British Coin Hunt' vowed to shake things up by putting 400 of the previously packaged coins into circulation, therefore making it the rarest 50p due to the low quantity figure.

Ian Lambert who owns 'The Great British Coin Hunt' has released the first 20 locations of where the coins have been put into circulation.

In another video, above, Ian explains he was inspired to release the coins after friend was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.
