Britain's oldest pub landlord isn't reopening on Saturday - because it's too risky

Britain's oldest pub landlord says he will not be won't be opening his doors on Saturday - saying he doesn't think it's safe.

Frank Collins, the 91-year-old owner of the Dog and Partridge in Sowood, West Yorkshire, has had brushes with death before and has no desire to take unnecessary risks.

The pub, between Huddersfield and Halifax, has been owned by Frank's family for nearly 70 years after his dad bought it in the 1950s.

Although the government has given the green light for boozers to reopen from Saturday, the landlord said it is still too dangerous.

He has put a sign on the door informing regulars they will have to wait a bit longer.

Frank, who carved out a successful career in the textile trade before taking over the pub from mum Mabel, who died in 2001, said: "I'm putting myself on the line if I do and it's just too much of a risk at my age.

"A stranger coming in could easily infect me so it's not worth it at this stage.

"I've put a notice on the door.

"I have had three months off so a few more won't go amiss. I have been watching TV and going for a walk, I've plenty of memories so I have lots to keep me occupied.

"My niece Alison comes round regularly which is good. I have just about finished with textiles, I had a warehouse at Marsden but I have vacated it."

The cancer survivor was nearly blown up on an aircraft carrier in 1948 when a colleague fired a pistol.

Frank who loves a party and who danced in the rain for his 90th birthday bash, added: "And sometimes I see regulars who come and have a chat outside when the weather is good.

"I'm not spending owt and I'm not making owt.

"I think maybe by the time we get to September that will be a safe time to open up as long as this virus doesn't kick in again."
