Britain's naughtiest schoolboy proves why you should 'never stop believing in yourself'

A teenager who turned his life around after once been labelled Britian's naughtiest schoolboy has been praised for his determination.

Tom Roberts, now 19, admitted his behaviour was "awful" when he was a young boy and spoke about how he even faced a jail sentence.

Tom, from Ellesmere Port, made an appearance on Channel 4's Mr Drew's School For Boys and was called 'Britain's naughtiest schoolboy' in 2004.

At the time it was reported Tom had suffered with behavioural problems since he was just 16 months old - and would even try to climb out of his cot and out of windows.

But Tom has changed his life through the help of his brother's company and he now works with his sibling to mentor others.

After sharing Tom's inspiring story, ECHO readers were quick to praise the teen for his actions.

Tom's brother, Carl Roberts, also commended his behaviour.

He wrote "So proud of you young man, now impart this knowledge."

Gareth Clare said: "Well done Tom, keep up the good work."

Sara Jellicoe praised Tom's perseverance on Twitter, writing: "Never, never stop believing in yourself. You've got a beautiful soul."

The Community Safe Podcast also praised Tom's work, and praised his attitude.

It wrote on Twitter: "Sometimes kids need support and guidance and people to believe in them."

Tom told the ECHO: "Back in 2014 I did a TV series called Mr Drew's School for Boys where, on that TV show, my behaviour was awful.

"I was always fighting, I was always getting in trouble and all that."

A brush with potential jail time served as a reality check to the 19-year-old when he faced grievous bodily harm charges.

He said: "I went to Crown Court in December for GBH [grievous bodily harm], after that my brother came and got me and it all started from there."

Tom's brother Carl Roberts launched a programme with his company TAG International that has helped Tom to turn his life around.

The 19-year-old said: "For the last three months I've been on a programme called the Start Taking Control course and it just blew me away.

"It just changed everything for me, previously I'd tried everything and nothing really changed.

"This course that I did with TAG International, my brother's company, it just completely transformed my mindset."

Although Tom was offered a variety of different support methods, nothing had worked for him until now.

He attributed his bad behaviour to a "lack of being understood" and "no effective support."

He believed that those offering him support didn't actually care about the task at hand and instead were doing it in order to get paid.

Tom said: "It was just people's jobs, they didn't really care."

But with his transformation, Tom insists that others like him can be helped.

He said: "I know a lot of people are stuck in my position.

"With especially the city of Liverpool, the gang activity, the Wirral as well, it is at an all time high.

"I feel like TAG International can transform my generation."

TAG International offer free support to help those suffering with behaviour issues like Tom was.

They have a Snapchat, Youtube and Instagram where more information can be found on their support options.
