Britain’s Jordanne Whiley beat her doubles partner in the US Open women’s wheelchair singles final to the seal the first major individual title of her career.
The 23-year-old from Birmingham, who won a clean sweep of grand slam doubles titles in 2014 with Yui Kamiji, beat the Japanese 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 in New York.
Whiley said: “It feels like a dream. I said at the beginning of the year that I wanted to win the singles title here and I’ve actually done it. To play Yui, who is my best friend, was pretty hard. I know her game so well so it is an advantage, but at the same time it was hard to see her in tears at the end.
“I’ve always said to people that I’m not just a doubles player, I am a singles player and one day I’ll show you. Today is that day and I’ll take it further by winning more singles slams.”
Another Briton, Gordon Reid, won the men’s wheelchair doubles final alongside France’s Stéphane Houdet, beating Nicolas Peifer and Michaël Jeremiasz 6-3, 6-1.
