Britain's Got Talent loses 450k viewers following 15,000 complaints over BLM routine

Britain's Got Talent lost only 450,000 viewers in last night's semi final compared to the previous week.

The drop in viewing figures comes as Diversity's Black Lives Matter anti-racism performance attracted more than 15,000 complaints to Ofcom.

The dance troupe that once won the show performed a routine where they reenacted the tragic death of George Floyd as a dancer dressed as a police officer knelt on Ashley Banjo's neck.

Many members of the public vowed to boycott the show arguing BLM was "too political", but the programme was still the highest rated of the day.

The second semi final on Saturday night pulled in 4.95 million viewers, compared to the previous week which garnered 5.4million viewers.

That's a loss of 450,000 viewers following the backlash, which made it the most complained about TV moment of the decade.

However, the show still pulled in more viewers than last year's equivalent week for BGT: The Champions.

Diversity member Jordan Banjo called the negative reaction "sad" and said it had affected his mental health, though the powerful performance has also been praised by many.

Show judge Alesha Dixon will reportedly quit if the show apologises for the backlash, with a source telling The Mail : "Ashley is in a complete state over all of this and it has knocked his confidence.

"Alesha has spent the week supporting him and building him back up.

"She is very sad about it all but staunchly stands by the dance. It is something she feels incredibly passionate about so if ITV were to say sorry, it would be understandably hard for her to continue."

Meanwhile, BBC's Last Night of the Proms reportedly pulled in 2.1 million viewers, after the programme also received backlash for its initial decision not to broadcast Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia.

The public were divided as some argued the songs represent national pride, but others felt they were inappropriate due to their colonial lyrics about the British Empire.

The BBC originally announced they would be playing an instrumental version of the songs without lyrics, but then made a U-turn following a backlash from angry Brits.

A reduced orchestra played in the Royal Albert Hall to no audience due to the coronavirus restrictions.

MirrorOnline has contacted a rep for Britain's Got Talent for comment.
