Britain's Got Talent hit with hundreds of Ofcom complaints as viewers slam 'disturbing' stunt

Hundreds of Britain's Got Talent viewers have already taken to Ofcom to complain after the series returned for its 16th outing - bringing with it more outlandish acts than ever.

The ITV show made a comeback last weekend with Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and new judge Bruno Tonioli passing their verdict on a series of hopeful new contestants taking to the stage to show off their talents as Ant and Dec returned to their hosting duties. But a couple of the more unusual acts sparked a backlash with some fans - including a particularly daring audition which saw a man set himself on fire.

Thomas Vu shocked the judges as he attempted to solve a Rubik's Cube - but took the challenge to extremes by making his body go up in flames while doing so. The contestant was a professional stuntman and was covered in a fire-retardant gel - but the audition was nonetheless slammed by some BGT viewers as "unacceptable and dangerous", The Mirror reports.

Ofcom received 66 complaints from viewers on Saturday, April 15, followed by a further 334 complaints on Sunday, April 16, making it the most complained-about show of the week according to a report from the regulator. The report does not specify which acts BGT viewers took particular issue with; however, the fire stunt was subject to several complaints on social media.

One person said: "BGT totally ill-considered showing a guy setting himself on fire whilst solving a Rubik's Cube. No thought to the fact of impressionable children watching the show."

BGT viewers said the dangerous stunt 'shouldn't be allowed' to be shown on the series (ITV)

Another viewer complained: "BGT absolutely not on, setting yourself on fire, do not try this at home. Shouldn't be allowed."

A third person fumed: "What an absolutely disgusting act to put on! Kids are watching this and will be terrified! Not clever."

"Something very disturbing about this guy being on fire doing the Rubik's Cube," someone else remarked. "It's not entertaining at all and doesn't sit right."

The stunt wasn't the only audition that sparked complaints from BGT viewers - another part of the show saw 'fartist' Ichikawa Koikuchi take to the stage to show off his strange skills, which included breaking wind to blow out the candles on a birthday cake. But many fans were not left impressed by the unusual talent.

"At one time, this type of 'act' would never had got through. How low the depths of BGT has fallen. It really is a load of hot air!" one viewer moaned.

Another person commented on the audition: "And so a new low was reached on Britain's Got Talent."
