Britain's Got Talent cancelled for 2021 as ITV release statement

ITV have confirmed that Britain's Got Talent won't happen at all this year, with bosses moving the new series to 2022.

There have been rumours over the past few weeks that the show would be in jeopardy because of the coronavirus pandemic and England being in lockdown again and now a statement has been issued confirming it will be shelved until next year.

The statement read: "Despite everyone at ITV, Thames and Syco doing their best to make it happen, and with our absolute priority of safeguarding the well-being and health of every person involved in the programme from judges, hosts and contestants to all of the crew and audience, the decision has been made to – unfortunately – move the record and broadcast of the 15th series of Britain’s Got Talent to 2022."

Auditions for the new series were meant to take place in London this month but, due to the current lockdown restrictions these were pulled.

Reacting to the news, one fan tweeted: "2021 is ruined... I cannot believe BGT is cancelled...," and another posted: "So sad that the show is cancelled this year, wish it was just postponed to a later date

Britain's Got Talent was forced to make major chances last year because of Covid, with the semi finals and final being pushed back months from the start of summer to the autumn and a number of acts having to pre-record their performances due to social distancing guidelines and travel restrictions.

Last year's show was won by northern singing comedian Jon Courtenay who moved both the judges and viewers at home on his way to triumphing in the final.

He performed at the socially distanced Royal Variety Performance from Blackpool in December.
