Britain's favourite chocolate bar revealed - and how much we spend on it

The average British shopper spends a whopping £328 a year on chocolate a survey has revealed.

According to the Moneysavingheroes investigation we retain traditional tastes where snacking is concerned, since over half of those questioned opted for a simple bar of Dairy Milk or Galaxy as their product of choice.

Almost 60 per cent consider chocolate an essential part of their weekly shop with 46 per cent eating it daily and in the process spending £5.50 per week.

But this figure trebles at Christmas with £64 - or 20 per cent of the annual total - typically being lavished on our favourite snack over the holiday period. In addition to selection boxes, 46 per cent of adults have an advent calendar .

Cadbury's top the tree since 37 per cent of those polled named Dairy Milk as their go-to chocolate bar.

Another American-owned manufacturing giant, Mars, is responsible for the nation's second most popular chocolate choice, with 19 per cent opting for Galaxy.

Nestle's Milky Bar got 13 per cent of votes cast while two more Mars favourites - the Mars bar and Maltesers - finished fourth and fifth.

George Charles, a spokesperson for MoneySavingHeroes said: “It’s no surprise the majority of Brits spend more money on chocolate over Christmas, because it’s a time when we splash out and treat ourselves.

“Chocolate is one of the foods that is universally loved so it isn’t too surprising that Brits spend so much on it.”
