Britain's cheapest supermarket named - and it's not Aldi or Tesco

Britain's 'cheapest' grocer has been named in a price comparison that looked at the cost of 78 essential items at Aldi, Lidl and the six biggest supermarkets.

The report, which factored in staples such as Hovis bread, milk, salad tomatoes and pasta, found the best value supermarket across branded and non-branded lines.

Which? said that the goods would cost the average customer £72.02 at Lidl.

In contrast, the exact same items would have cost you £111.77 at Waitrose last month.

The second cheapest supermarket was Aldi, where the 78 goods would have cost £72.23 in total.

Asda followed closely behind in third place, charging £80.15.

The same shop at Waitrose was an eye-watering £40 more, making it the most expensive of the main supermarkets at £111.77.

Which? also compared the prices of 175 branded items, such as Flash cleaning spray at all major supermarkets, excluding Aldi and Lidl, which stock only a limited number of branded goods.

Asda was found to be the cheapest at £299.78, while Ocado was the priciest at £402.82.
