Britain's best value supermarket: Waitrose comes top of Which? 'Best Buy' rankings for own-brand products

A year-long study by consumer watchdog Which? has revealed the UK’s cheapest supermarket for own-brand goods - and its Waitrose.

Supposed low cost brands such as Tesco, Asda and Iceland came bottom of the study comparing 160 different own brand food, drink, cleaning products, batteries and sunscreens to see which represented the best value for money.

Discount brand Aldi came second in the annual “best buy” rankings followed by Sainsbury’s and Lidl in third and fourth place.

It was revealed that 47 per cent of Waitrose’s own brand products won the Which? best buy award through the year - compared with only one best each for Tesco and Asda products tested.

This was still better than frozen food store Iceland where none of its products were rated best buy.

The biggest fall was felt by Morrisons, which dropped from first to sixth place in just one year with only 20 per cent of its products rated best buy.

But despite Waitrose’s victory, Sainsbury’s and Lidl were still rated the best when it came to food, drink and household products.
