The UK has the highest coronavirus death rate in the world, new data shows.
Over the last week the country suffered an average of 935 Covid deaths a day, according to Oxford University research platform Our World In Data.
That means for each of the last seven days, 16 out of every million people in Britain died of the coronaviru s.
The rate puts the country above the Czech Republic (16.3 per one million), Portugal (14.8) and Slovakia (14.5).
The US, where more than 400,000 people have now been killed by Covid-19 - 250,000 more than India, which is second place in the rankings - has a death rate of 10 per one million people.
The UK's death statistics have made for particularly grim reading over the past week.
On Wednesday 1,564 coronavirus patients died, the highest daily total since the pandemic began.
During that time almost 90,000 people have died within 28 days of catching the coronavirus in the UK.
At the heart of the torrent of statistics that are published each day about the virus and its effects are millions of personal stories.
A particularly tragic one is that of Gail and John Evill, a husband and wife who died within two weeks of one another.
Just before Christmas they were admitted days apart from one another to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.
John, a 62-year-old pub landlord, died on January 2 after being placed in intensive care, Wales Online reported.
Gail was at his bedside when doctors made the heartbreaking decision to turn off ventilators.
The 52-year-old was still badly ill with the virus and worked to arrange John's funeral while fighting it off.
Although the disease took a turn for the worse Gail refused to be taken to ICU.
She died on Friday.
