Britain hit by flood warnings sparking fears it could rain every day until June

Miserable May could give way to a soaking June as a warning to brace for floods dash hopes the UK's spring weather will improve.

Forecasts are warning some parts of Britain to prepare for a drenching as "heavy and persistent" rain is forecast for the next 10 days.

Some experts are warning the downpours could continue throughout the rest of May.

The Met Office has issued flood warnings across the UK as the country is forecast to be lashed by torrential rain and chilly temperatures for ten days.

The dismal weather forecast comes after a month of battling through wind and rain in beer gardens and parks as England's lockdown eased allowing bars and pubs to reopen- but only for outdoor socialising.

The next stage of unlocking will see venues allowed to fling open their doors to drenched punters keen to meet family and friends inside from Monday, as indoor mixing rules begin relaxing.

And judging by the latest weather forecast, customers will be fleeing the beer gardens for the warm and dry indoors in droves as soon as it's permitted.

The Met Office is warning the UK will be blighted by torrential rain along with chilly temperatures for days to come.

Parts of the South West have already been issued with yellow rain warnings after today's weather conditions caused havoc on the roads, the Star Online reports.

There are also eight warnings issued to areas of Devon and Somerset as residents have been warned to "be prepared."

A flooding warning has been issued by the Environment Agency for Doniford Stream in Exmoor.

A series of flood alerts are in place around that region, along with parts of Warwickshire, Somerset, Devon, and the Forest of Dean.

Rainfall was reportedly been heaviest across the Midlands and Wales on Thursday afternoon but the southwest had the most persistent downpours, according to the national forecaster.

Northern Ireland will expect thunder tonight but conditions are expected to get slightly drier overnight.

Temperatures across the country will barely make it past the mid-teens as the UK faces highs of between 15C and 16C in York and Peterborough.

Friday is executed to be brighter but "fairly cloudy" across the north and east of England.

Thunder and heavy showers are forecast for Wales, southern England and Northern Ireland.

The heavy rainfall will continue throughout the week and become more widespread, forecasters predict.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said: "Essentially the set-up in weather that we've got at the moment is set to remain for the foreseeable future."

He estimates that the UK has seen 53.6mm of rain up to May 11 - 77 per cent of the month's average total.

Weather charts show up to 57mm of rain could have fallen by Sunday.

The Met Office has said damp conditions can be expected to last well into next week and perhaps beyond.
