Britain braced for months of heatwaves and thunderstorms

The UK is set for three-months of extreme weather conditions as the Met Office's long-range forecast for the summer predicts things are going to be a lot hotter than usual. However, with extreme temperatures comes torrential downpours and frequent thunderstorms.

Of course the forecast is not set in stone and plenty could still change, but there is currently a 40 per cent chance temperatures will increase over summer compared to a 20 per cent chance in previous years. The news comes as Britain faced a deluge of thunderstorms and rain over the Jubilee weekend with many outdoor plans scuppered, reports The Express.

For the West Country unsettled weather is expected next week, although this coming weekend should be drier than the bank holiday. Above average rain fall is currently expected at the end of the month and the start of July.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Even with a slight reduction in the chance of a wet period, spells of wetter weather are likely to [bring] heavy showers or thunderstorms at times. There is an increase in the likelihood of warmer-than-average conditions

“Whilst this doesn’t necessarily mean heatwaves will occur, it does increase the likelihood of heatwaves compared to normal.”

Over the weekend Bristol and the surrounding areas were issued with a thunderstorm warning. It did not sotp plenty of Jubilee events going ahead although some were impacted by the bad weather.
