Britain adds vessel to monitor North smuggling

A British Navy vessel will join an international mission monitoring North Korea's smuggling activities in the East China Sea, it has been learned.

The landing platform dock ship HMS Albion was set to arrive at the U.S. naval base in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, as early as Friday. The Albion will support surveillance activities on North Korean ships receiving refined petroleum products and other goods from foreign vessels in international waters.

The British vessel will use a U.S. base in Japan -- in line with the Agreement Regarding the Status of the United Nations Forces in Japan signed related to the Korean War -- and will likely be dispatched to the East China Sea, according to sources.

It is the second British Navy ship to participate in the mission. Australian and Canadian forces are also engaged in airborne surveillance activities based out of the U.S. Kadena base in Okinawa Prefecture.
