Brit woman killed by boat propeller while swimming near beach on Greece holiday

A British woman has died after she was struck by a speedboat's propeller while swimming in the sea.

The horror incident occurred on Monday morning while the 60-year-old was in the water off Avlaki beach on the island of Corfu.

She suffered serious injuries to her "lower extremities" and was unconscious when she was pulled from the sea after being spotted by other bathers just before 10am local time.

A man who pulled her out of the water delivered the devastating news to her husband and daughter. The woman died before she could be taken to hospital.

It is said the speedboat was pulling a water skier and did not stop, and officials were investigating whether the boat's operator did not know that a swimmer had been hit.

The public broadcaster in Greece said the Brit lived most of the year on the island, while other media outlets described her as a tourist.

The authorities have launched an investigation into her death.

It was unclear whether she was swimming with family members or other Britons at the time of the incident.

Her husband and eldest daughter were informed by the man who pulled her out of the water, local media reported.

The woman was a resident of Corfu for most of the year and was "very popular in the local community", public broadcaster ERT reported.

Many speedboats were operating in the area on Monday morning, local media reported.

The woman's body was taken to Corfu Hospital after the incident.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are in contact with the local authorities following reports that a British woman has died in Corfu.”

On Sunday, an 82-year-old tourist died after being pulled unconscious from the sea off Tavronitis beach in Chania, Crete.

A 53-year-old holidaymaker was injured when she was struck by a boat's propeller off the Greek island of Lefkada on August 19. She was rushed to hospital for treatment.

A 14-year-old British boy, Eddie Jarman, died after he was hit by a speedboat while snorkelling near the island of Mo'orea, off Tahiti, in the South Pacific on August 9.

Greece is on the UK Government's air bridge list and is exempt from "all but essential" travel.

Passengers who were on a flight from Zante on the Greek island of Zakynthos to Cardiff in Wales last week have been told to isolate after it was identified as the source of at least seven confirmed coronavirus cases.

Giri Shankar, incident director for the coronavirus outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said: "Cardiff and Vale Test Trace Protect and Public Health Wales have identified at least seven confirmed cases of Covid-19 from three different parties who were infectious on Tui flight 6215 from Zante to Cardiff on 25 August.

"As a result, we are advising that all passengers on this flight are considered close contacts and must self-isolate."

Investigations had found that the virus had spread to other groups of people because of "a lack of social distancing, in particular by a minority of the 20-30 year age group".
