Brit with 'world record' giant kidneys set for operation to stop them crushing his lungs

A man is preparing to have both of his kidneys removed after they have grown to 'world record' size.

Warren Higgs from Windsor has a condition called polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and his kidneys have now grown so big they are crushing his lungs and could kill him.

The disease causes small cysts filled with fluid to build up on the kidneys.

Warren, 54, first developed the condition when he was 35 after he had an aneurysm which lead to him having a stroke and being paralysed on his right.

It led to his kidneys starting to grow, doctors saying they're now around five times bigger than they should be.

The father-of-one has started to speak out about his condition to try to raise money to buy an electric recumbent tricycle after he's had his operation.

Warren's last scan showed his left kidney to be 42cm by 27cm. His right one is possibly now world record size at 49cm by 28cm.

Doctors think his kidneys may be three times heavier than a 7.4kg kidney taken out in India previously thought to be the heaviest in the world.

Warren told the BBC: "Mine are extreme. They just grow continuously.

"Considering your kidneys are meant to be the size of a clenched fist, mine are massive.

"They're crushing my lungs, crushing my stomach, and I know they've just done a recent scan and they're crushing my heart now. It's horrible because I can't move. I can't breathe. You just cant do anything."

Warren will have both of his kidneys removed and then he will be on dialysis for the rest of his life after the operation.

Windsor Cars taxi firm and the charity Driven Forward have set up a Go Fund Me page for Warren to help him raise enough money to buy the tricycle to get his fitness back after the op.

The Go Fund Me says Warren is "never seen without a smile on his face" and is "known for spreading positivity throughout the community".

It adds: "Warren is always finding ways to help others in the community, and he is always putting others before himself.

"A new wheelchair will be lifechanging for Warren. It will help him regain the independence and mobility that he once had."
