Brit tourist shot dead in bungled robbery on Caribbean paradise island

Masked gunmen have shot dead a 71-year-old British holidaymaker in a bungled robbery in the Caribbean.

The victim had been visiting a friend in the Turks and Caicos, about 150 miles (200km) north of Haiti, but had been taken to Florida following a medical evacuation from the island, where he died.

Two assailants burst into a property shortly after 11pm local time on Tuesday.

They demanded money, but it was not immediately clear how the situation escalated before the gunmen made off with cash, a ring and a watch.

The victim's friend is being treated for none life-threatening injuries at a private residence in Cooper Jack - on the island’s south coast.

It is the second murder in three days in the archipelago, which is home to just 35,000 people, taking the 2019 homicide toll to 10, according to Police Commissioner Trevor Botting.

In a statement, he said: "This spike in gun crime simply has to change. No one should be happy with how gun crimes are increasing in the Turks and Caicos Islands."

The island had a fatal shooting at a night club in Providenciales on Saturday night, leaving a man dead and one man wounded.

Earlier this year, the US state department warned travellers to “exercise increased caution” when visiting the archipelago, 600 miles south-east of Miami.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said  in a statement: "We are in contact with the family of a British national, following his death in Florida."
