Tributes have been paid to a 23-year-old British tourist who died after falling through a church roof in Australia.

The incident happened back in February but Wales Online reports it has now emerged the tourist was from Wales.

On February 24, at around 2am he was with five other men on the roof of St Vincent’s Catholic Church at Surfers Paradise on Queensland's Gold Coast.

According to police he fell 10 metres through the church's skylight.

Speaking to ABC  at the time, Acting Inspector Brendan Wiblen said police were “conducting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of this incident”.

Warren Kinne, a visiting priest who works for the parish, said he was turning people away a few hours later because services had been suspended.

He said: "Whatever they were doing on the roof I don’t know, but falling through to his death is very sad for the family. We’ll pray for them."

Detectives have interviewed five men aged between 19 and 31 from south-east Queensland and Western Australia.
