Brit soldier plummets through roof of California home in parachute fail

A Brit paratrooper training in the US plummeted through the roof of a house in California during a training exercise, police have said.

The soldier, who was training with US troops, was said to be recovering well after receiving injuries in the accident.

The Atascadero Police Department said the incident happened on July 6 at 4:55 pm, when officers received multiple reports of a parachutist who had fallen without a chute deployed.

He had leapt out of a plane at more than 15,000 feet on a 'High Altitude Low Opening jump' or Halo jump, generally used on special forces operations.

Fire and police officers rushed to the scene and found the parachutist who had fallen through the 'exterior and interior roof of a residence' in Atascadero.

He was conscious but 'stunned with complaints of pain but no visible serious injuries' police said, adding the occupants of the residence were not home at the time.

Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services treated the injuries and assisted in taking the man to the hospital.

A further investigation revealed that a parachute had failed to fully deploy during manoeuvres by a group training at Camp Roberts.

This was the only incident involved and all others participating in the jump landed safely at the designated landing field.

Police said: "We are grateful that the parachutist received only moderate injuries and that no other persons suffered injury."

Military.com reports that a British Embassy spokesperson in Washington, DC, added that the soldier was 'recovering well' after the mishap.

They added: "The U.K. military always tries to minimise the disruption caused by exercises and continues to be extremely grateful for the support from the local community for critical exercises such as this."

The British embassy didn’t disclose which the British soldier’s unit, and with which U.S. troops he was training.
