Brit saves on flights by catching buses to Poland spending just £83

A Brit cut the cost of a holiday to Poland by ditching the airport and taking NINE buses instead.

Andrew Cowell spent less than £85 on the feat, which covered 1,500 miles. The 47-year-old set off from his home in Derby at 7am on Wednesday, June 21 and arrived in Krakow 61 hours later at 7.52pm on Friday, June 23.

First, the rail worker travelled 130 miles to London using seven different buses costing him a total of £14. He then boarded the 8am Flixbus coach to Krakow which cost him just £69 and enjoyed a dinner on the Seine in Paris while he was waiting to change buses.

Andrew said: "For most people travelling by coach so far would be impractical. Flying is efficient but it's too clinical for me. When you fly you just arrive at your destination rather than travel there. By getting buses I feel like I've travelled and I get to see places when I'm travelling.

"I got to stop off in Paris and had a dinner by the river. It got to see the white cliffs of Dover and the beautiful French countryside along the way as well."

Andrew has previously used buses to travel to his holiday destinations. In February he paid just £10 to travel 137 miles to Whitby, North Yorkshire, and in April he journeyed 320 miles to Cornwall for a tenner.

He takes advantage of the government's £2 cap on bus fares in England to make his journeys as cheap as possible. His bus journey to Krakow was cheaper than "even budget airline flights", he said.

Although he "really enjoyed" his bus journey, Andrew is paying £102 for his return flight back to Manchester Airport on Friday, June 30. Andrew is not sure when he will take on his next bus journey challenge but is looking into going to Singapore by bus in the future.

He said: "This has been my best bus journey yet. Everything surprisingly ran on time or even got to destinations early. I met some nice people along the way as well although I do think I was the only person going all the way to Krakow.

"The furthest you can go by driving is Singapore so I'm going to look into the practicalities of doing that."
