Brit Joe Salisbury hit in face before booking Australian Open semi-final spot

Londoner Joe Salisbury booked his place in a second career Grand Slam semi-final with men’s doubles partner Rajeev Ram at the Australian Open.

Salisbury, who reached the last four of Wimbledon in 2018, combined with his American partner for a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Henri Kontinen and Jan-Lennard Struff.

The pair have yet to drop a set in the event, the only real blip of this match when Salisbury briefly needed medical attention after he was hit in the face by a ball.

Salisbury and Ram controlled the match from start to finish, a break of serve in each set enough to edge out Struff and Kontinen.

The result provided revenge for the duo, who were beaten by Kontinen, then paired with John Peers, at Wimbledon last year.

Salisbury and Ram now face Kazakhstan pairing Alexander Bublik and Mikhail Kukushkin.

Meanwhile, another British doubles player, Jonny O’Mara, failed to make the last four after he and Marcelo Arevalo were beaten 6-3, 6-2 by the fourth seeds Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek.
