Brit dies of coronavirus in Corfu after going to clinic with 'severe pneumonia'

A British man has died of coronavirus in a hospital on the Greek island of Corfu.

The 71-year-old man, from Scotland, died on Thursday morning, just hours after he was admitted to Corfu's General Hospital in an "extremely bad condition", it is reported.

The Briton was displaying symptoms of "severe pneumonia" and was tested for Covid-19 at a clinic before he was transferred to the hospital.

That test result came back positive, and a second test, conducted at the hospital, also showed that he was infected with the virus.

Greece is not on the Scottish Government's list of 'safe travel' corridors, meaning people arriving in Scotland from Greece must quarantine for 14 days.

Corfu is among the regions in Greece that are on the UK Government's travel corridor list. Travellers arriving in England do not have to quarantine.

However, it is thought all of Greece could soon be added to the quarantine list due to a spike in cases there.

The rate of new cases in Greece has climbed to 20.5 per 100,000 people.

The Government's uses a number of criteria, including a threshold of 20 cases per 100,000, to determine which countries to add to or remove from the quarantine list.

The British man who died in Corfu went to a clinic on Wednesday with symptoms of "severe pneumonia", Enimerosi reported.

He was in an "extremely bad condition" when he was admitted to Corfu General Hospital, where he died on Thursday morning, the report added.

It is said that his health rapidly deteriorated and he was on a special infections ward.

Two tests - one taken at the clinic and one at the hospital - came back positive.

The man's name was not released.

Officials did not say where the man is thought to have contracted the virus.

They did not reveal whether the man was on holiday in Corfu or if he resides on the island at least part of the year.

Four elderly patients are currently being treated for coronavirus at Corfu General Hospital.

One of them is a 68-year-old German citizen who lives on the island.

Greece has reported 18,886 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 393 deaths since the start of the outbreak.
