Brit dies and husband in intensive care after couple run over while crossing road in Spain

A British woman has died and her husband is in intensive care after they were run over on a pedestrian crossing in Spain.

The elderly couple were rushed to hospital after being mowed down in the Costa del Sol resort of Fuengirola, just before 5pm on Tuesday.

It was confirmed late on Wednesday the unnamed British woman had died from the injuries she suffered.

Local reports said the man was pushing his wheelchair-bound wife on the crossing when they were struck.

A police investigation into the tragedy is ongoing, but the driver reportedly hit the elderly expat couple after being blinded by the sun and failing to spot them.

Neither of the two Brits has been named and police have yet to make any official comment.

They lived in Spain for several decades, Surin English reported.

Officers will submit a report to a local investigating magistrate who will have to decide whether the motorist should face any criminal charges.

It is understood the driver worked for a tourist chauffeuring company.

Fuengirola is a major tourist resort of around 75,000 people that has more than five miles of beaches.
