Brit dad stranded in Spain with memory loss after being hit by car and thrown in air

A British dad is fighting for life in a Spanish hospital after he was hit by a car and thrown into the air.

Haydn Atwood, 39, has been in a critical condition for two weeks since the horror smash and has suffered memory loss.

Now the carer can't recognise loved ones and is losing weight rapidly, Wales Online says.

"They're worried if he's strong enough for the operations and worried about his heart.

"He also has memory loss. They're trying to keep him relaxed and calm, but he's frustrated.

"He also doesn't know who people are.

"He seems to have gone downhill a lot in himself," his mother-in-law Suzanne Gater, 58, said.

Haydn was jogging down the side of a hill with teenage son Ashley when he tripped and fell into the path of an oncoming car on the first day of the family break in Malaga, Costa del Sol.

Ashley, 17, witnessed his dad being thrown into the air before paramedics then fought to save his life at the roadside.

But the dad was left with internal bleeding and was put on life support.

Haydn, of Caerphilly, south Wales, is also now suffering two water infections on top of a catalogue of injuries.

Suzanne continued: "He still hasn't had any more operations - he needs one to his pelvis and leg.

"Today he had a full-body scan to see if they can operate on Wednesday.

"He's also lost a lot of weight.

"It's just so frustrating because of the damage he's doing to himself. His brain is saying different things to his body.

"He doesn't know he can stand up. He's in a confused state most of the time and glazed over. Sometimes he's agitated and doesn't realise what he's doing or saying."

As Haydn had no travel insurance whilst on the trip, his family now face a hefty bill to bring him home by air ambulance.

They have been told they need raise between £18,000 to £28,000, depending on his condition.

His relatives said they have been to the British Consulate in Malaga, but told officials cannot help with costs.

So, Hadyn's family and friends are now rallying together to try and raise the money needed.

So far, relatives back in Caerphilly have held a fundraising night and are planning another on July 5.

Ashley is also doing a sponsored BMX ride on Sunday.

"We need him home and if we're going to get near this target, I have to keep on to people," Suzanne added.

"I have to keep it fresh every day.

"It's hard, but I'm prepared to do everything that I need to do."

The Foreign Office said: "We are assisting the family of a British man who has been hospitalised in Spain."
