Brit could death penalty in Philippines after crystal meth raid

A British accountant could face the death penalty after he was allegedly caught with crystal meth in the Philippines.

Philip Joseph, 47, was in a flat in the capital Manila with two locals when drugs cops burst through the door.

Officers claim they found him with Josephine Olayao, 38, and tuk-tuk driver Rodolfo del Rosario, 42.

The three of them are accused of preparing sachets of methamphetamine , known locally as shabu.

Joseph, who owns the flat and was working in the financial sector as an accountant and legal
collections manager, was arrested on Monday.

Police said he remains in custody while prosecutors prepare a case against him.

A report stated officers found four sachets of shabu.

Joseph faces charges of possession and dealing, which carry a maximum punishment of the death sentence or life in prison.

The death penalty is currently suspended in the country but President Rodrigo Duterte, who is on a no-holds-barred mission to eradicate illegal drugs, wants to reinstate the punishment.

Since he took office in 2016, police have killed thousands of people in the drugs crackdown. They claim all of the killings were in self-defence.

Thousands of others have died in unexplained circumstances. Amnesty International has warned the killings could amount to a crime against humanity.
